The Salt & Pines project...

Salt & Pines is an ongoing project highlighting Maine’s rich heritage and history. We have lots of things going on, from books to video presentations. We have several videos that are currently being taped and edited, as well as a few print projects. There will also be a forthcoming periodical style quarterly concentrating mostly upon news and articles covering Maine's historical societies, preservation and living history groups.

At this time I am assembling submissions for the next two volumes, The Maine Steamboat Album and The Maine Party Book. There is still plenty of time, so if you'd like to join in feel free to email me with any questions or suggestions.

The retail price of these books has been set at $20.00. Proceeds from the sales of this book will be diverted back into promotion of the Salt & Pines project and for future productions. The main intent of this project is to create a source for people to learn about Maine folklore as well as anecdotal and historical facts surrounding what life in Maine was like in the past. Some projects will be like this one, others will be more historic in nature, and we will also be offering video works such as documentary and interview styled DVD’s.

These products are primarily intended to be educational, as well as entertaining, and we hope they come to find widespread usage in the state’s educational systems.

If you are interested in joining the many fine authors who have volunteered contributions to this project, please email dlsoucy@remembermemedia.com with your questions, or for more information.

Salt & Pines: The Maine Steamboat Album,  will consist of articles revoling around Maine's steam transportation vessels, and the importance these boats had for Maine's economy.

Salt & Pines; The Maine Party Book, will consist of stories revolving around Maine's many trolley parks, dance halls and other sites where entertainment took place during the 1800s and first half of the 1900s.

Here are some FAQ’s on the project, and our basic criteria:

What is the Salt & Pines project?

The Salt & Pines project is intended to be an (hopefully) annual anthology of short stories, poetry and photography about Maine’s bygone days. The stories and poems will deal with daily life and the toils and troubles encountered by Maine’s people through the years.

What time frame should these stories cover?

Ideally, the stories should cover years before 1969 and as far back as you can remember beyond that date. Older writers might offer something from the ‘30s or ‘40s, while a younger writer may remember a story from the ‘60s. We will also be accepting research articles of specific topics, such as steamboats in Casco Bay, Lake Steamers and so forth.

Who are these stories supposed to be about?

We would prefer to obtain some viable first person stories, but we will take a look at submissions about others as well.

What should these stories be about?

Well, the main idea of this series is to stir the memories of what working and playing in Maine was like, so the stories should be about a job or chore somebody had, or what kinds of things you did while not working.

Will I be paid for my story?

Unfortunately, at this time we cannot pay for your contribution. We are however, providing the writer of selected submissions with two(2) free copies of the book, and full credit for your story. We will also be providing brief bio’s of the writers and photographers who appear in the book. It will be an excellent opportunity to promote yourself if you are a new writer, and to remind readers of writers they may have read before.

Do I have to be a ‘known’ writer?

Not at all. In fact, one of the reasons for this series is to provide an opportunity for those interested in writing about Maine history to break into writing, or show off your new work. We intend to balance the accepted submissions between established and new writers as much as we can.

Do my stories have to be new, or can I submit old work?

The intentions at this time are to provide a finished book with all new material. We would prefer to not receive work that has already been published by someone else. But like everything else in life, it may be possible to make an exception, depending on the work submitted.

Criteria for Salt & Pines:
Poetry should not exceed 32 lines.
Photographs should be in JPEG format, min 200DPI.
New work only should be submitted.
If you have a previously published piece you wish to submit, please email the details to us for consideration.
